Blackwood Homes and Care Group has established a new partnership with MCR Pathways, a national mentoring charity, to broaden career opportunities for young people in Scotland. Through this agreement, Blackwood employees will engage with the charity’s mentoring scheme, offering professional expertise, career guidance, and personal experience to participants.
This effort draws on Blackwood’s diverse workforce—covering housing, care, and technology—to supply mentors with varied backgrounds. Young people involved will explore career options they might not have considered, including positions within Scotland’s housing and care industries.
For Blackwood staff, the initiative provides a way to cultivate leadership and mentoring abilities beyond their regular duties. It also supports the goals of both organizations: Blackwood’s dedication to employee development and MCR Pathways’ mission to help young people realize their capabilities.
Jason MacGilp, chief executive of Blackwood Homes and Care Group, highlighted the shared advantages. “Our people bring an incredible range of skills, knowledge and life experience to Blackwood, and this partnership gives them an opportunity to use that experience to make a difference beyond their day-to-day roles.” He stressed that the collaboration strengthens the shared principle of enabling individuals to “Live Life to the Full.”
Many mentoring schemes face challenges in pairing young participants with professionals who can offer practical career insights. Blackwood’s workforce, operating across Scotland’s housing, care, and technology fields, delivers a wider range of mentors than standard corporate partnerships. The program also establishes a reciprocal exchange: mentors gain fresh perspectives from young participants, while mentees discover career paths they may not have examined before.
Fiona Ralph, Blackwood’s organizational development manager, led the effort to finalize the partnership. She observed that the alignment between the two organizations’ values, combined with Blackwood’s varied employee base, creates significant potential for influence. “We have colleagues with such varied skills and life experiences, and mentoring is a fantastic opportunity to share that with young people, while our own people learn and grow from the experience too.”
The initiative will soon integrate Blackwood employees into MCR Pathways’ mentoring network, with plans to extend participation to young people throughout Scotland. The charity’s established framework, linking mentors with schools, youth organizations, and community groups, will help the program expand efficiently.
Blackwood’s involvement addresses a key gap in mentoring efforts by connecting young people with professionals who can provide authentic, industry-specific advice. The partnership also reinforces the company’s commitment to social responsibility while enhancing employee engagement through meaningful community contributions.
Initial mentoring sessions will focus on career exploration, with an emphasis on sectors where Blackwood operates. The program’s structure ensures scalability, allowing for gradual expansion based on demand and mentor availability.
Both organizations have set a timeline for assessing the program’s early outcomes, with adjustments planned to refine its effectiveness. The goal remains to create lasting opportunities for young participants while reinforcing Blackwood’s role as an active participant in Scotland’s workforce development.
